June is Dysphagia Awareness Month – And We Need Your Help!

In 2008, Congress passed the bipartisan statute which marked June as Dysphagia Awareness Month in the United States. While we have made great strides in the assessment and treatment of dysphagia within these past two decades, the majority of individuals are not aware of what dysphagia is, its impact, and how to help. This is why the Dysphagia Research Society (DRS) is committed to promoting dysphagia awareness for the ultimate goal to improve the lives of those with swallowing disorders.

So, we are asking YOU to help! We are calling on individuals with dysphagia, caregivers of someone with dysphagia, clinicians who work with individuals with dysphagia, and researchers whose work is in dysphagia. Please submit a quick video using one of the prompts below. Help us raise awareness for a disorder that impacts almost 1 in 25 individuals.

Instructions: Please use a video recording device (e.g., smart phone) using landscape (horizontal) format to record your message in response to a prompt below. Please keep it to 1-minute or less.

Other helpful tips include:

  • Limit competing environmental noise (e.g., turn off TV, close window)
  • Make sure your face is well-lit for easy viewing but avoid being backlit (lighting behind your face)
  • Hold phone steady using two hands, a tripod or placing it against something stable
  • Move closer to the person rather than using the zoom in feature (zooming in can reduce picture resolution)
  • Make sure lens is clean
  • Ensure hands are not covering camera or microphone

Once you are satisfied with your message, please complete the form below.

If your submission is promoted through our social media platforms, please help share to raise dysphagia awareness and use #dysphagiaawareness

Prompts for PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS:

  • Please share how dysphagia has impacted your life and the lives of your family members
  • Please share what you think the general public most needs to know about dysphagia and how they can help
  • Please share your hope for others with dysphagia

Prompts for CLINICIANS:

  • Please share why you have chosen to dedicate your career to working with individuals with dysphagia
  • Please share why dysphagia awareness is needed
  • You can even talk with your patient within the video (if s/he gives permission to do so) or talk with another healthcare professional also involved in dysphagia care
  • If you wish, you can include clips of you “in action” to help promote awareness of how we assess and treat dysphagia

Prompts for RESEARCHERS:

  • Please share how your research is intended to help those with dysphagia
  • Please share how the general public can contribute to research efforts
  • If you wish, you can include clips of you “in action” to help promote awareness of current research underway

Please note that if your video is not selected, it may be due to technical difficulty, over the storage or time limit, etc. We will work with you to ensure this is not the case. However, depending on amount of submissions, we may not be able to promote all submissions. While this is not anticipated, we reserve the right to not promote videos we feel do not align with the DRS mission (click here to view the mission).

We will be accepting rolling admissions from May 15th through June 26th.  Videos will be posted throughout the month of June.  Please submit early if you would like your video to be posted early in June to help us kick off Dysphagia Awareness Month!
