President's Message

Dear DRS Colleagues:

It is with great pride and pleasure that I write this message as the 2013-2014 President of the Dysphagia Research Society.  I am honored to represent the Organization in this capacity and would like to welcome the 2013-2014 Board of Directors who officially took office on April 15th, as well as the new members of our Society.

Thank you to all of the members who have contributed to this Society in the past. Much has been accomplished. As with all organizations, we still have progress to go in several areas. Thanks in advance to all of you who will continue to work on these initiatives. During my tenure this year, we are planning on implementing as well as continuing a few initiatives that are designed to help you, the patients and potential new members. These initiatives include:

a) Ad hoc committees focused on student involvement and fellowship, facilitated research opportunities, and cultivating relationships amongst other complementary societies within and outside of North America;

b)   Online case studies and a discussion forum within our website;

c)    A new website layout to create a more user friendly and informative site;

d)  Collaboration with the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders (NFOSD) to enhance the fight for greater visibility and funding for swallowing research on a National level.

The 2013 Annual Meeting and Post-Graduate Course in Seattle, Washington, was quite successful and very well received. This meeting featured cutting-edge research as well as moving speeches by patients and family members affected by dysphagia.

I hope to build on the excellence of prior meetings and provide a successful 2014 DRS Annual Meeting and Post-Graduate Course. The upcoming meeting will be held on March 6-8, with the Post-Graduate Course being held on March 5th, at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Program Planning Committee is currently discussing various innovative and pertinent topics and speakers. Rest assured we will maintain the breadth and high level of scientific research papers and posters.  The planning process is in its early stages, but please know that you will receive updates as things progress.  In the meantime, I encourage you to click here to explore what Nashville has to offer, as we’re hoping you can join us!

I encourage you to “like” the DRS on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/DysphagiaResearchSociety

Looking forward to seeing familiar faces, as well as seeing some new ones!

With warm regards,

Cathy Lazarus, PhD
